Frequently Asked Questions
about the Ask a Reference Question Service

Who may use this service?
This service is intended for students, staff and faculty of the University of Houston System campuses who attend or teach classes at the University of Houston System Center at Cinco Ranch (UHS-CR). If you are not affiliated with UHS-CR, we can reply to your inquiry only if it concerns the system center or its partner libraries. You may use the form or e-mail directly to the library supervisor.

How quickly will my question be answered?
The library supervisor will respond to questions when on duty (Monday-Thursday 3-8 pm). Questions submitted Monday through Thursday will usually be answered within 48 hours. Questions submitted Friday through Sunday will usually be answered on the following Monday, excluding holidays. If a question involves in-depth research which cannot be answered within a 48 hour period, the patron will be notified by e-mail.

Who will receive my question?
Your question will go to the UHS-CR Library Supervisor. If it is best answered at a partner library location, your question will be forwarded to that location and you will be sent a copy of the message.

What kinds of questions can I ask?
Any question you might ask at a reference desk in any library. For example:

  • I am having trouble finding an article on my home campus library's online databases.  Which database should I use?  What terms should I use?
  • Where should I begin to look for information on this topic?
  • Can you help me find ... a web address, a quotation source, an abstract or citation, a historical fact, a biographical fact?
  • And just about anything else that supports research and instruction

A request for lists of items (i.e., addresses) is not appropriate; any single query will be responded to as quickly as possible.  Thank you for understanding our limitations.
