University of Houston-Downtown

Community Development Project

Existing Item
Requested Biennial Funding: $ 665,000

Description and Justification
This strategy provides continued funding for community development activities on the near-north side of Houston. These funds serve as seed money for community-based efforts to revitalize two separate economically depressed north side neighborhoods‹the predominately African-American Acres Homes subdivision and the largely Hispanic area bound by Downtown, I-45 North, 610 Loop North and Highway 59 North.

Factors Impacting Strategy
The individual projects include a variety of economic development and community enhancement programs. Each of the funded projects has its own board that provides oversight for implementing the project. Each project must provide semi-annual progress reports to the university leadership.

New Classroom Building

Tuition Revenue Bond Request
Requested Funding: $ 30,000,000

Project Description
This facility will provide much-needed instructional and instructional support space. Due to the high-density, urban setting of UH-Downtown, it is critical that the structure include additional parking capacity. The building will be located on land to the west of the campus, with vehicular and pedestrian connections across existing roadways.

Northwest Corridor Teaching Center

Tuition Revenue Bond Request
Requested Funding: $ 16,000,000

Project Description
This facility will provide instructional and instructional support space needed by UH-Downtown as it moves to meet the demand for university-level instruction that exists in Northwest Houston. UH-Downtown will work closely with the North Harris-Montgomery Community College System to serve those students seeking to transition from the two-year community college to a university offering baccalaureate and master¹s level instruction.
